Key Statistics On Opioid Use in Illinois:
- There were 3,013 fatalities due to opioid overdose in Illinois.
- Opioid overdose deaths rose 2.3% from 2020 and 35.8% from 2019.
- Males accounted for 74% of the fatalities, with a fatality rate of 36.1 per 100,000.
- Synthetic opioids were found in 89% of opioid overdose deaths.
The struggle in Illinois is further complicated by varying levels of buprenorphine availability in pharmacies. Data from 2022 shows that 74.0% of pharmacies had buprenorphine in stock, with a higher availability in chain pharmacies compared to independent ones.
