Pharmacies with Suboxone In Stock in California
We understand the importance of having access to Suboxone medication. Over the past 24 months, we found that 50.4% of the pharmacies we contacted in California reported having Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) in stock. For new patients, our team works closely with patients to find pharmacies that carry Suboxone in stock, and we keep track of it with our Pharmacy FInder tool so that we can share that information with other patients.

Medicaid Coverage Options in California
In California, the state Medicaid program is called Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal provides free or low-cost health coverage to eligible individuals and families with limited income. It is administered by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Here are some important aspects of Medi-Cal:
- Eligibility: Medi-Cal eligibility is based on various factors, including income, family size, age, disability status, and immigration status. Eligibility criteria and income limits may vary based on the specific category of coverage.
- Coverage: Medi-Cal offers comprehensive healthcare coverage, including doctor visits, hospital care, prescription medications, preventive services, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and more. Some services may require copayments or have limited coverage.
- Managed Care: In most cases, Medi-Cal enrollees receive their healthcare services through managed care plans. These plans contract with the state to provide and coordinate healthcare services for enrollees. There are several managed care plans available in California, and individuals can choose a plan that best suits their needs.
- Expansion under the Affordable Care Act (ACA): California has expanded Medi-Cal eligibility under the ACA, allowing more individuals to qualify for coverage. The expansion extends eligibility to low-income adults, including those without dependent children, who meet the income requirements.
- Application Process: Individuals can apply for Medi-Cal through various methods, including online applications through the Covered California website, in-person assistance at local county offices or enrollment sites, by phone, or by mail. The application process involves providing information about income, household members, and other relevant details.
It's important to note that specific details and options may vary based on individual circumstances and the county of residence. For personalized information and assistance regarding Medi-Cal eligibility and enrollment, individuals can visit the official Medi-Cal website or contact their local county social services office.
Health Insurance Options in California
California has a health insurance exchange known as Covered California. Covered California is the state's marketplace where individuals and families can shop for and enroll in health insurance plans. It was established under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to provide access to affordable health coverage options for Californians.
Here are some key points about Covered California:
- Health Insurance Plans: Covered California offers a range of health insurance plans from different insurance companies. These plans are categorized into different metal tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, based on the level of coverage and cost-sharing.
- Subsidies and Financial Assistance: Depending on your income and eligibility, you may qualify for subsidies and financial assistance through Covered California. These subsidies can help lower the cost of your monthly premiums and reduce out-of-pocket expenses.
- Open Enrollment Period: Covered California has an annual open enrollment period during which individuals can enroll in or switch health insurance plans. The open enrollment period typically takes place in the fall, although there may be special enrollment periods available for certain qualifying life events.
- Medi-Cal Eligibility: Covered California also helps determine eligibility for Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program. If you are eligible for Medi-Cal, you can enroll in it through the Covered California website.
- Application Process: To enroll in a health insurance plan through Covered California, individuals can apply online through the Covered California website, with the option for in-person assistance at enrollment centers or through certified enrollment counselors.
Covered California provides resources and assistance to help individuals compare health insurance plans, understand their coverage options, and determine if they qualify for financial assistance. It's important to visit the official Covered California website or contact their customer service for the most up-to-date and accurate information about health insurance options in California.

Insurance Requirements for Suboxone Treatment
As of 2008, health insurers and group health plans are required, by law, to offer the same level of benefits mental health and substance use treatment as they do for “physical health” (i.e. medical and surgical care). This legal requirement is thanks to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). As a result, the majority of insurance plans offer some degree of coverage for medications for addiction treatment (MAT) and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), including buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone). Similar to “physical health” benefits, mental health and substance use treatment benefits often have limitations. Depending on your plan, you may have to adhere to certain requirements set forth by your insurer.
Common insurance requirements include:
- Proof of medical necessity
- Prior authorization
- Copayments
- Deductibles
- Yearly visit limits
